Born in the late 4th century in Roman Britain, Saint Patrick was taken to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. After 6 years he escaped back home where he embraced Christianity and became a cleric. Saint Patrick later returned to Ireland, landing in Co. Wicklow, to spread Christianity to the Celts.
Saint Patrick’s legacy led to him becoming the patron saint of Ireland where he is celebrated on March 17th both nationally and internationally, thanks to the Irish diaspora. This usually involves plenty of green accessories and Irish flags along with traditional Irish dishes and of course a whiskey-based tipple or two.
This year at Powerscourt Hotel Resort & Spa we want to help you celebrate at home Powerscourt style. As tribute to a famous Wicklow landmark, our beloved Sugar Loaf Mountain, our Assistant Food & Beverage Manager Cristian has created the Sugar Loaf Legacy, a gorgeous whiskey cocktail, perfect for toasting Saint Patrick. This fabulous concoction is based on a locally sourced Irish product, a blend of Fercullen Whiskey, distilled in Powerscourt Distillery right here in Powerscourt Estate.
To recreate this delicious drink at home you will need:
50ml 14-year-old Fercullen Whiskey
15ml Blue Curacao
15ml Real Honey
15ml Egg White
Handful Fresh mint
20ml Lemon Juice
Slice of Orange Zest
Method:
Muddle the fresh mint and add to a cocktail shaker, along with all other ingredients.
Shake for 20 seconds to improve the egg white texture
Add ice and shake for 30 seconds
Strain into a glass
Garnish with a slice of orange zest
